REDEVELOPMENT CRYPTA BALBI (1 prize)
Redevelopment and enhancement of the archaeological area Crypta Balbi
Client National Museum
A project for the redevelopment of the entire site as a cultural system, an articulated and multifunctional space open to the city, which restores to the area of Crypta Balbi its historical and urban significance.
The project for the recovery of the entire site as an articulated and multifunctional cultural system is open to the city and restores the historical and urban significance of the Crypta Balbi area. Crypta Balbi becomes a collective place again, where the ancient blends with the new, material becomes ruins, and the Crypta reconnects with Rome. Making this piece of ancient city public means acting with consideration for the preservation of individual chronological layers, protecting the artifacts, and making the entire archaeological complex safely accessible. The work is clearly contemporary, recognizable, respectful of the ancient, and non-invasive. The entire Crypta Balbi complex is characterized by natural chronological stratification, suggesting a layered approach that intersects and overlaps, interpreting and restoring the historical complexity of the site.
REQUALIFICATION OF CITY MARKET (honourable mention)
Requalification of the Santo Stefano City Market in Ferrara
Client Municipality of Ferrara
The architectural redevelopment project aims to preserve the building’s primary function as a market. Conservation measures will maintain the perimeter shops without altering the architectural layout. The design focuses on people and urban quality, creating opportunities for a more enjoyable and sustainable environment. Key aspects include a vibrant, multifunctional public space that enhances urban and environmental quality.
The intervention concerns the Santo Stefano Covered Market in Ferrara, located near Via Boccacanale Santo Stefano and the Estense Castle. The building is of historical and cultural value and falls within a seismic analysis zone. Currently, it functions partly as a food market, with commercial activities on the ground floor and a flea market at its center, while the upper floor houses offices.
WATERFRONT MESSINA (1 prize in competition)
Urban, architectural and functional redevelopment of the maritime state property area between the Boccetta and Annunziata creeks in the City of Messina
Client Port Autority of the strait of Messina
Redesigning Messina’s waterfront entails restoring the city’s connection to the sea, reclaiming the spatial continuity of the urban frontage—once defined by defensive walls and later by the colonnades of Simone Gulli and Giacomo Minutoli, both of which were destroyed by the earthquakes of 1783 and 1908. In the redevelopment project, the continuity of the colonnade has been reimagined through the redesign of the ground plane, projecting the spatial integration of the city and the sea onto a horizontal dimension. Ground modelling becomes the key strategy to shape this segment of the city, bridging its separation from the sea while simultaneously integrating pivotal landmarks such as the former Exhibition Centre, the historic garden, and the port areas.
Requalification of Sant’Angelo Magno complex (1 prize Regula)
Restoration and conversion of the “ex maternità” buildings into university residence and “former infectious diseases” buildings within the “Sant’angelo Magno” complex to be designated as scientific, technological and cultural hub.
Client Ascoli Piceno Municipality
The project involves the restoration and repurposing of the “Ex Maternità” and “North Wing and Former Infectious Diseases” buildings within the Sant’Angelo Magno complex in Ascoli Piceno. The site will be transformed into a Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Hub. The area includes the Sant’Angelo Magno church and former convent, as well as buildings that previously served as a hospital. Some of these have already been repurposed to host university facilities for the University of Camerino, the new Municipal Auditorium, and the Ex Maternità building, located at the southeastern corner of the complex.
