Female Architect of the Year
Winner: Susanne Veit-Aschenbrenner
statement of the jury | The three projects – a new church building, a conversion and redensification by a kindergarten and an exhibition design – show a work of great variety and strength in different scales and building tasks. The jury was impressed by the natural integration into the context and the careful treatment of the existing building. The clear and significant design on the outside creates a surprisingly spatial quality and complexity on the inside, enhanced by the clever use of light and materials.
The architecture on show is therefore timeless in the best sense of the word and has a lasting effect.

Emerging Female Architect of the Year
Winner: Eva Maria Hierzer
statement of the jury | Her projects are deeply focused on the relationship between place and scale. Award or prize received:
The Gerda and Salomo Wuorio Prize – Named in honour of Finnish philanthropists Gerda and Salomo Wuorio, the prize is presented annually to the most outstanding Master’s thesis in architecture.
In May 2024, the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) was delighted to present Taika Pirilä with the Gerda and Salomo Wuorio Prize for the best Master’s thesis in architecture.
The transition to a circular economy is essential across all sectors, including construction, if emission targets are to be met. Building materials cannot be reused, however, unless they can be recovered intact.
An architect and graduate of Aalto University, Pirilä used her thesis to investigate deconstruction methodologies that can help to facilitate the smart and efficient reuse of building materials. Her proposed solution was applied to the design of a development in Linnanniemi, Turku, comprising a mix of residential, commercial and office properties.

Digital Archive of Greek Women Architects (1923-1981)
The Digital Archive of Greek Women Architects is an initiative by the Attica Section of the Association of Architects with Graduate Degrees from Higher Schools (SADAS), documenting the contributions of female architects in Greece between 1923 and 1981. The project sheds light on their impact in urban planning, public and private architecture, education, and architectural theory, areas where their recognition has often been overlooked.
A Living Archive of Women in Architecture
The archive was launched in May 2020 and continues to grow, with contributions from over 80 women architects or their descendants. It was made possible through the voluntary efforts of SADAS members and received support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
The archive traces the rise of women in Greek architecture, starting with the first female graduate of the National Technical University of Athens in 1923. From a slow start—only 26 women graduated between 1923 and 1949—to exponential growth in the following decades, today, women make up a significant presence in architecture schools across Greece.
Beyond documenting professional achievements, the archive explores the personal stories of women architects, including their struggles balancing professional and personal life, their role in social movements, and their broader impact on post-war architectural thought. Many architects in the archive share autobiographical reflections, while for those no longer alive, family members and archival research contribute to their profiles.
The archive is open-access and continuously updated, welcoming new contributions from architects of different generations. It also integrates photographic documentation, literary texts, paintings, and reflections, making it a rich source of historical testimonies.
Designed to be a dynamic and inclusive historical record, the archive serves researchers, students, architects, and the wider public in Greece and internationally, offering insights into the evolution of women’s roles in architecture.
For more information, see the introductory texts of the Archive.

The Italian Member Section Highlights Arch. Guendalina Salime’s Proyects
Il Consiglio Nazionale Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori (National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects, and Conservationists) highlights for International Women’s Day the works of italian architect Guendalina Salime:
REDEVELOPMENT CRYPTA BALBI (1 prize)
Title Redevelopment and enhancement of the archaeological area Crypta Balbi
Client National Museum
A project for the redevelopment of the entire site as a cultural system, an articulated and multifunctional space open to the city, which restores to the area of Crypta Balbi its historical and urban significance.
The project for the recovery of the entire site as an articulated and multifunctional cultural system is open to the city and restores the historical and urban significance of the Crypta Balbi area. Crypta Balbi becomes a collective place again, where the ancient blends with the new, material becomes ruins, and the Crypta reconnects with Rome. Making this piece of ancient city public means acting with consideration for the preservation of individual chronological layers, protecting the artifacts, and making the entire archaeological complex safely accessible. The work is clearly contemporary, recognizable, respectful of the ancient, and non-invasive. The entire Crypta Balbi complex is characterized by natural chronological stratification, suggesting a layered approach that intersects and overlaps, interpreting and restoring the historical complexity of the site.
RIQUALIFICATION OF CITY MARKET (honorable mention)
Title Riqualification of the Santo Stefano City Market in Ferrara
Client Municipality of Ferrara
The architectural redevelopment project aims to preserve the building’s primary function as a market. Conservation measures will maintain the perimeter shops without altering the architectural layout. The design focuses on people and urban quality, creating opportunities for a more enjoyable and sustainable environment. Key aspects include a vibrant, multifunctional public space that enhances urban and environmental quality.
The intervention concerns the Santo Stefano Covered Market in Ferrara, located near Via Boccacanale Santo Stefano and the Estense Castle. The building is of historical and cultural value and falls within a seismic analysis zone. Currently, it functions partly as a food market, with commercial activities on the ground floor and a flea market at its center, while the upper floor houses offices.
WATERFRONT MESSINA (1 prize in competition)
Title Urban, architectural and functional redevelopment of the maritime state property area between the Boccetta and Annunziata creeks in the City of Messina
Client Port Autority of the strait of Messina
Redesigning Messina’s waterfront entails restoring the city’s connection to the sea, reclaiming the spatial continuity of the urban frontage—once defined by defensive walls and later by the colonnades of Simone Gulli and Giacomo Minutoli, both of which were destroyed by the earthquakes of 1783 and 1908. In the redevelopment project, the continuity of the colonnade has been reimagined through the redesign of the ground plane, projecting the spatial integration of the city and the sea onto a horizontal dimension. Ground modelling becomes the key strategy to shape this segment of the city, bridging its separation from the sea while simultaneously integrating pivotal landmarks such as the former Exhibition Centre, the historic garden, and the port areas.
Requalification of Sant’Angelo Magno complex (1 prize Regula)
Title Restoration and conversion of the “ex maternità” buildings into university residence and “former infectious diseases” buildings within the “Sant’angelo Magno” complex to be designated as scientific, technological and cultural hub.
Client Ascoli Piceno Municipality
The project involves the restoration and repurposing of the “Ex Maternità” and “North Wing and Former Infectious Diseases” buildings within the Sant’Angelo Magno complex in Ascoli Piceno. The site will be transformed into a Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Hub. The area includes the Sant’Angelo Magno church and former convent, as well as buildings that previously served as a hospital. Some of these have already been repurposed to host university facilities for the University of Camerino, the new Municipal Auditorium, and the Ex Maternità building, located at the southeastern corner of the complex.
