Through the open international architectural competition “Innovative Bioclimatic European School complex in Crete”, the School Buildings Organisation of Greece (SBO) sought the best ideas from around the world for the new European school in Crete.
The competition was held in association with the International Union of Architects (UIA), through its UIA‐ARES International Work Programme.
Theme and objectives
The complex would serve the needs of ENISA, the European Network and the Information Security Agency. ENISA was founded in 2004 and has been based in Greece since 2005, in the little town of Voutes (near Heraklion), Crete. Before the competition, the School of European Education was operating in a leased building in Heraklion.
This competition had the challenge of building and operating contemporary bioclimatic educational facilities for students coming from different cultural environments. Also, the idea of the competition was to provide a contemporary educational environment; created with cutting edge bioclimatic design and using renewable energy sources, it would contribute to the development of students into conscious and conscientious world citizens.
Eligibility
This competition was open to all licensed architects across the globe, groups of architects or teams of multi‐disciplinary professionals, under the condition that the team leader was a licensed architect.
