Theme and objectives

The complex would serve the needs of ENISA, the European Network and the Information Security Agency. ENISA was founded in 2004 and has been based in Greece since 2005, in the little town of Voutes (near Heraklion), Crete. Before the competition, the School of European Education was operating in a leased building in Heraklion.

This competition had the challenge of building and operating contemporary bioclimatic educational facilities for students coming from different cultural environments. Also, the idea of the competition was to provide a contemporary educational environment; created with cutting edge bioclimatic design and using renewable energy sources, it would contribute to the development of students into conscious and conscientious world citizens.

Key criteria

Below are the main evaluation criteria for the participants to consider:

  • Reflect and symbolise the multicultural character of the complex;
  • Ensure all required spaces were set up to accommodate a good quality of education;

  • Be a state of the art complex;
  • Ensure the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficient conceptual design.
