Shanghai-Pudong Hua-xia Cultural Tourism Zone Conceptual Design

The Shanghai Pudong Huaxia Culture Tourist Resort is located in Pudong District, Shanghai in eastern China. By combining eastern and western cultures, the idea was to build a landmark in Shanghai as well as an international tourist city complex by the sea with the principal function of providing a space for recreation, business, culture and entertainment.

This competition of ideas, conducted by invitation over two stages, was organised by the Architectural Society of China in cooperation with the International Union of Architects (UIA). It was promoted by Shanghai Huaxia Culture Tourist Resort Development Co. Ltd.

Theme and objectives

The idea of the project was to create an international and comprehensive tourist city on the waterfront, combining eastern and western cultures in a veritable Shanghai landmark.

This competition was organised over two stages. Participants needed to submit an overall conceptual planning scheme in the first stage. Then, the jury selected three schemes from those submitted. The shortlisted participants were invited to take part in the second stage of the competition. 

 

Key criteria

Below are the main criteria to which the jury were attentive: 

  • Attention to business planning and architectural expression.
  • Focus on issues such as regional positioning, functional layout, programmatic design, architectural structure and landscape, green space, road transport systems, visitor arrangement, civil pipeline systems, etc.
  • Inclusion of supporting cases for functional positioning and project contents. 
  • Adoption of an international perspective for the project by referring to international success stories, taking into consideration different aspects such as location, transportation, weather and other characteristics. 
  • Attention to such factors as landscape, function, transport, civil piping systems, use of underground space, cost and land elevation.
