Nam June Paik Museum

The Kyonggi Cultural Foundation launched a single stage open international ideas competition for the design of a museum dedicated to the media artist Nam June Paik.

In conformity with the UNESCO-UIA regulations, the competition was approved by the International Union of Architects (UIA). 

 

Competition results

First prize: Kirsten Schemel from GERMANY

Second prize: Woo Kyu Sung from the USA.

Third prize: Noriaki Obake from JAPAN

Theme and objectives

The aim of the competition was to select an architectural design which would harmonise with the creative work of the Korean artist, a pioneer in artistic research linked with the media. The museum would house the artist’s work and serve as a framework for his future creations. At the same time, this museum would promote the Province of Kyonggi as an international centre for arts and culture.

 

Key criteria

The main elements of the programme were as follows: 

  • Permanent and temporary exhibition spaces: Nam June Paik gallery and a replica of the artist’s studio; a hall for site-specific artwork by the artist;
  • Research and educational spaces: an auditorium; an audio-visual room, a library/research centre; seminar rooms; offices;
  • Technical facilities for restoration and storage;
  • Administrative facilities;
  • Visitor amenities: shop; café; playground; performance space; rest zone;
  • Sculpture garden and open-air studio.

Eligibility

The competition was open to licensed architects and multi-disciplinary teams led by an architect.
