This international competition, organised over two stages, was approved by the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects and the International Union of Architects (UIA).
Fountain in the Seattle Civic Center
Theme and objectives
The Municipal Art Commission of the City of Seattle proposed to build a fountain on the joint site of the Civic Centre and the Century 21 Exposition to record the cultural advancement of the city, as well as showcase its water and light facilities.
The Civic Centre fountain was designed to enhance local culture and to please both citizens and visitors. A changeable jet water display in the fountain was to be used to make a spectacle of the city’s excellent water supply. Lighting could also be used to recognise the municipality’s renowned hydro-electric power and light provision.
