This international competition was organised to design a memorial on the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.
The competition was organised to commemorate the victims of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Built on the site itself, the monument was intended to serve as a reminder of the innocent victims who died there.
The survivors and families of those who died appealed to artists and architects across the world to make this project a reality: to build, dig and carve out something that would forever mark what Auschwitz was.
There was no set location for the construction of this monument. However, the area between the ruins of the two large crematoria at the end of the railway line, where the fate of the deportees was decided on arrival, was deemed particularly suitable for the projects.
However, the participants in this specific architectural competition were not to forget that this monument was intended to commemorate not only the martyrs and their struggle, but also the fraternity born of suffering and common combat. It was also intended to become a place of universal remembrance.
426 projects were submitted to the competition jury, which was composed of the following members:
This international competition was open to all architects and artists from across the world.
Competition closed. Results announced on May 1959.
