12th Thyssenkrupp Elevator International Award

This international architectural competition was presented in order to select the design of an Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre, which was to be the first institution in Turkey with the intended facilities. 

This one-stage competition of ideas was promoted by Thyssenkrupp Elevator in collaboration with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. 

This competition was approved by the International Union of Architects (UIA).

Theme and objectives

Istanbul is an important metropolis with a unique geographical location, historical monuments, important cultural and economical potential and wonderful natural scenery. 

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality wanted to establish a centre fully equipped with adequate technology and facilities in order to be prepared for any disaster that may affect Istanbul and to develop public consciousness about disasters, specifically earthquakes. The building would additionally host relevant courses, congresses and seminars. 

Below were the main objectives of the competition: 

  • To establish a technology centre exemplifying the “Edutainment” approach, equipped with adequate infrastructure to conduct educational activities to prepare visitors for disasters; 
  • To create a state of the art design aiming to contribute to Istanbul’s urban context; 
  • To contribute to Istanbul by creating a prominent tourist attraction in the city.

Key criteria

The designs submitted to the competition were evaluated by the jury in accordance with the following criteria: 

  • The visual and scenic character of the design and its integration in the urban and environmental context; 
  • Sustainability, efficiency and functionality of the design, especially in matters of accessibility, safety, security, etc…; 
  • Structural integrity of the proposed design; 
  • Cost and implementation effectiveness; 
  • Any adverse environmental effects.

Eligibility

Any team led by an architect with a completed degree in architecture, authorised to practise the profession in their respective countries and/or registered in any Association or Society thereof, were authorised to enter the competition. 

The teams could be multidisciplinary but the leader had to be an architect meeting the aforementioned criteria.
