Combining growing populations and increasing wealth, many countries in Africa are likely to experience rapid growth in building activity in the coming decades. To manage this development in a way that supports sustainable development goals, encourage digital transformation and ensure that homegrown talent is given the opportunity to flourish, African architectural education must develop to meet the challenges.
Key challenges include capacity building through research collaboration and exchange programmes, attracting local teaching talent and participation by practitioners in educational programmes as well as establishing transparent procedures for international validation of architecture schools in Africa. This session will explore how African architecture schools can rise to the challenge and contribute to building a sustainable future in Africa through the establishment of the UIA Africa Research Hub.
