Suncheon Art Platform

The city of Suncheon in South Korea held a single stage ideas competition with the aim of identifying the best proposal for the Suncheon Art Platform in the city centre.

It was supported by the International Union of Architects and the Korean Institute of Architects, and was conducted according to the UNESCO-UIA Regulations for International competitions.

Keywords : Culture, Urban Landscape

Theme and objectives

Boasting natural spaces such as the world class Bay Garden, Suncheon has succeeded in promoting itself as an ‘eco-city’. The Art Platform project responded to the city’s demand to have a tourist hub with an iconic architectural landmark.

The Suncheon Art Platform includes an art centre, a visitor centre and a new Yeonja-ru. As the civic heart of the urban regeneration project, it was envisioned that this design competition would lead to a built outcome where all of the spaces of the Suncheon Art Platform would be designed in unison and where buildings and public space would be combined in a creative and harmonious way.

The goal of this competition was to explore the Art Platform’s potential as a generator of Old City revival. It aspired to help the City of Suncheon find a repository of cultural and historical assets contained within its walls so that citizens and visitors can together engage in its past and present.

Another goal was to define the strategic interventions the city would choose for the development of the competition site.
